The film begins with a fast-cut, documentary-like style that feels just as entertaining as it is informative. From there, the style slowly evolves into a more conventional narrative as the film continues to be filled with little details, like the way that Ace orders the casino cooks to put “exactly the same amount of blueberries in every muffin.”
There are so many compelling themes in Casino. The attention to detail in the casino, the false bedrock that Ace’s marriage was built off of, and Nicky turning into a blood-thirsty hound all work together to create a movie that is as compelling as it is terrifying. It also illustrates just how predatory the mafia could be against each other for no good reason.
Casino is a powerful and resonant film that speaks even to those who do not care for the subject matter. The acting is outstanding, particularly from De Niro and Stone. The story is complicated and multilayered, but it is never overly-sentimental or melodramatic. The drama is gripping and the directing is superb, making this a masterpiece of destruction and betrayal. It is definitely worth watching.
